Am Sonntagmorgen haben wir schon fast alles fertig zur Abfahrt, als es wieder anf\u00e4ngt stark zu regnen. Wir schauen in die Wetter App und da es, zumindest bis Dienstag, nirgendwo besser zu sein scheint, beschlie\u00dfen wir kurzfristig, noch eine Woche in Burnaby zu bleiben.
\nDie Regentage verbringen wir mit Berichten \u00fcber Nordkanada und Vancouver Island auf YouTube, Besuchen im Schwimmbad und Hot Tub und einem Besuch bei Ikea; wir besitzen jetzt einen Handmixer wie zu Oma\u2019s Zeiten.
\nAm Dienstag wird das Wetter besser und wir machen nachmittags einen Spaziergang am Burnaby Lake. Dort gibt es direkt am See gute M\u00f6glichkeiten zur Vogelbeobachtung. Es sind haupts\u00e4chlich Enten und Kr\u00e4hen, aber auch einige andere Exemplare zu sehen. Die V\u00f6gel machen richtig L\u00e4rm und wenn ein Schwarm aufgescheucht wird, kommt man sich fast vor, wie in Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s \u201eDie V\u00f6gel\u2018\u201c. Da wir die falschen Objektive mithaben, beschlie\u00dfen wir, am n\u00e4chsten Tag nochmal hier hin zu gehen. Mit dem gro\u00dfen Tele gelingen Ralph dann auch einige gute Aufnahmen.
\nAm Donnerstag fahren wir nochmal in die Stadt. Wir wollen uns noch M\u00fcckenschutz f\u00fcr den Norden holen. Im Internet bin ich bei der Suche auf Mountain Equipment Company (MEC) gesto\u00dfen. Ein riesiger Laden mit allem, was das Outdoorherz begehrt. Da es sich jedoch um ein CoOp handelt, muss man Mitglied sein, um dort einkaufen zu k\u00f6nnen. F\u00fcr $ 5 erwerben wir eine lebenslange Mitgliedschaft und erledigen die gew\u00fcnschten Eink\u00e4ufe. 2 Sachen, die nicht im Laden vorr\u00e4tig sind, k\u00f6nnen wir bestellen und in die Fililae auf Vancouver Island liefern lassen. Anschlie\u00dfend fahren wir mit dem Bus zum Inukush am Strand. Da es ein sch\u00f6ner Tag ist, laufen wir am Strand entlang Richtung Innenstadt und nehmen den Skytrain zur\u00fcck zum Campingplatz
\nFreitag und Samstag verbringen wir wieder mit allem m\u00f6glichen Kleinkram. Ralph geht auf das Dach und macht es schneefrei. In einer Autowaschanlage sp\u00fclen wir nochmal das ganze Salz ab.
\nAm Sonntag machen wir uns dann aber endg\u00fcltig auf den Weg nach Vancouver Island. Auf dem Weg zur F\u00e4hre kommen wir durch Delta. Ich habe im Internet gelesen, dass dort eine M\u00fclldeponie ist, an der sich zur Zeit jede Menge Adler aufhalten und gut beobachten lassen. Also steuern wir die M\u00fclldeponie an und finden auch kurz vorher einen kleinen Parkplatz am Wald. Hier wurden auf einem ehemaligen Milit\u00e4rgel\u00e4nde Wanderwege angelegt. Da es ziemlich kalt und windig ist, bleibe ich im Auto und Ralph macht sich auf die Suche nach einem guten Standpunkt. Als er zur\u00fcck kommt und wieder aufgew\u00e4rmt ist, fahren wir zur F\u00e4hre. Die n\u00e4chste geht erst um 17:00h. Das hei\u00dft, wir w\u00fcrden um 18:35h dort ankommen und m\u00fcssten uns im Dunklen noch einen Stellplatz suchen. So beschlie\u00dfen wir, ein kurzes St\u00fcck zur\u00fcck zu fahren und auf dem Walmartparkplatz zu \u00fcbernachten und dann eine F\u00e4hre am Montag zu nehmen. <\/p>\n

Habe ich schon erz\u00e4hlt, dass mich Vancouver an Solingen erinnert? Es ist sehr bergig und der innerst\u00e4dtische \u00f6ffentliche Verkehr erfolgt mit Oberleitungsbussen. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, die in irgendeiner anderen Stadt gesehen zu haben.
\nWir haben den Eindruck, dass Vancouver eine sehr junge Stadt ist. Im Skytrain sind wir fast immer die \u00c4ltesten. Die meisten anderen Passagiere sind zwischen 20 und 30. Es ist ein komisches Gef\u00fchl, wenn jemand aufsteht und uns seinen Platz anbietet.
\nF\u00fcr uns ist es schwer zu sagen, wo Vancouver aufh\u00f6rt und die Vororte anfangen. Fast alle Hochh\u00e4user sind Wohnanlagen und es entstehen noch einige mehr. Auf dem Weg in die Stadt sehen wir ca. 40-50 Baukr\u00e4ne. In Lougheed habe ich ein Schild gesehen, dass dort ein Turm mit 1.500 Wohneinheiten entstehen soll. Das macht uns nat\u00fcrlich neugierig, was die Immobilienpreise und Mieten angeht. So bleiben wir immer mal vor solchen Aush\u00e4ngen stehen und schauen uns die Preise an. Anfangs haben wir Probleme, die Gr\u00f6\u00dfe einzusortieren, da hier alles in Squarefeet ausgeschildert ist. Als wir uns dann die Umrechnung im Internet angesehen haben, fragen wir uns, wer sich diese Preise leisten kann. Hier mal jeweils zwei Angebote von Eigentums- und Mietwohnungen:
\nEine Wohnung 1 Bed + Den mit 723 sqft\/ca. 67 qm wurde f\u00fcr $ 568.000\/ca. \u20ac 408,600 und ein 3 Bed, 3 Bath Townhouse mit 1,974 sqft\/ca. 180 qm wurde f\u00fcr $ 2.875.000\/ca. \u20ac 2.070.000 gerade verkauft.
\nEine Bright 2 Bedroom Suite (2 Bed + 2 Bath) mit 788 sqft\/ca. 73 qm wird f\u00fcr $ 2.750\/ca. \u20ac 1.980 und eine Spacious Penthouse Suite with Private Roof Top Deck (2 Bed + 2 Bath) und 1,123 sqft\/ca. 104 qm wird f\u00fcr $ 3.750\/ca. \u20ac 2,700 in der Olympic Village zur Miete angeboten. <\/p>\n

We are nearly ready for take-off on Sunday morning, when it starts raining again. We check our weather app and since the forecast isn\u2019t better for other areas, at least until Tuesday, decide to stay for another week.
\nWe spent most of the rainy days with watching reports about northern Canada and Vancouver Island on YouTube, visits to the swimming pool and hot tub and a trip to Ikea; we now own a manual mixer just like my grandma had.
\nAfter the weather got better on Tuesday we go for a short walk at Burnaby Lake. There we discover an area with great opportunities for bird watching at the lake. There are mainly ducks and crows, but a few other smaller species as well. The birds are pretty noisy and when sometimes I feel as being in Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s movie \u201eThe Birds\u201c. Since we don\u2019t have the right lenses with us, we decide to go back tomorrow again. With the big tele lens Ralph manages to take a couple of good pictures.
\nOn Thursday we drive into town again. We want to buy some anti-mosquito stuff and in the internet I came across Mountain Equipment Company (MEC). This is a huge shop with everything outdoorsy. Since it is a coop, one has to be a member in order to shop there. For $ 5 we buy a lifelong membership. We can order 2 items that they do not have in store and get them send to the outlet on Vancouver Island. Afterwards we take the bus to the Inukush on the beach. Since it is a nice day, we stroll back along the beach towards the city center and then take the skytrain back to the campground.
\nWe spend most of Friday with small things. Ralph cleans the roof from the snow and we drive to a truck wash to rinse off the salt.
\nOn Sunday we finally leave for Vancouver Island. On the way to the ferry we go through Delta, where there is a waste management area. I read in the internet that currently a lot of eagles can be seen around the deposit. We find a small parking lot close to a wood. A former military area is now open to the public with hiking trails. Since it is cold and windy I stay in the car and Ralph tries to find a good spot. After he is back and has warmed up again, we continue towards the ferry. The next one leaves at 5 pm. This means we\u2019ll be on Vancouver Island at 6:35 pm and would have to look for an overnight spot in the dark. We therefore decide to go back a bit where we saw a Walmart and then take a ferry on Monday morning. <\/p>\n

Did I already mention that Vancouver reminds me of Solingen (for non-Germans: a town close to Duesseldorf and for GE: one of the big GE HC locations)? It is pretty hilly and public transport in the inner city is managed through trolley busses. I can\u2019t remember, having seen these in any other city.
\nIt is our impression, that Vancouver is a young City. In the skytrains we are the oldest nearly all the time. Most of the other passengers are between 20 and 30. It is a strange feeling, when someone gets up from their seat and offers it to us.
\nFor us it is difficult to determine, where Vancouver ends and the suburbs begin. Nearly all skyscrapers are living areas and more are being built. On the way into town we count something between 40 and 50 cranes. In Lougheed I saw an advertisement for a tower with 1,500 apartments. Off course this makes us curious about real estate prices. Therefore we stop a couple of times to read the ads at the real estate agents. Initially we can\u2019t properly categorize them since they are all offered in square feet. After we checked the translation into square meter, we wonder, who can afford the prices. Here are two offers for buying and two offers for renting:
