Nachdem wir unsere Tour vier Wochen lang f\u00fcr einen Heimatbesuch \u2013 angef\u00fcllt mit jeder Menge Terminen \u2013 unterbrochen haben, landen wir am 12. September abends wieder in Seattle und werden am Flughafen abgeholt. Daf\u00fcr nochmal unseren herzlichen Dank an Barbara. Die ersten Tage in North Bend steht ganz im Zeichen von Einkaufen, Ein- bzw. Umr\u00e4umen, kleineren Wartungsarbeiten am Unimog und Bek\u00e4mpfung des Jetlag und warten auf unsere US Dollar. Die Wartezeit nutzen wir um in einer Mietgarage in Tacoma die 100.000 km Inspektion durchzuf\u00fchren. Auf dem Weg dorthin, fliegt uns dann der gerade erst reparierte Allradschalter wieder um die Ohren. Zum Gl\u00fcck ist es nur ein Schlauch, der abgerutscht ist. Bei der Inspektion wird Ralph dankenswerter Weise von Stephan unterst\u00fctzt, auf den ich durch Zufall gestossen bin. Stepelix (Stephan, Petra und ihr Unimog Felix) sind seit 2015 in Kanada und USA unterwegs und ich habe festgestellt, dass wir in Deutschland fast Nachbarn sind und uns in Kanada zwei Mal nur um ein paar Tage verpasst haben. Zum Gl\u00fcck f\u00fcr die beiden waren wir gerade in der Heimat, als ein Teil bei Felix kaputt ging. So konnten wir es f\u00fcr sie mitbringen. Wir verabreden, da\u00df wir in Kontakt bleiben und uns irgendwann in den n\u00e4chsten Tagen an der K\u00fcste treffen. Nachdem wir dann unser Geld haben, machen wir uns auch auf den Weg. Unseren urspr\u00fcnglichen Plan, die Olympic Peninsula zu umrunden, verwerfen wir aber und fahren s\u00fcdlich von Seattle direkt Richtung Westk\u00fcste, wo wir in Twin Harbor auf dem Campingplatz \u00fcbernachten. Am n\u00e4chsten Tag geht es dann weiter auf den Highway 101, der bis runter nach Mexiko immer an der Westk\u00fcste entlang f\u00fchrt. Unseren ersten Stop und kurzen Strandspaziergang machen wir in North Cove. Nachmittags erreichen wir das Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, wo wir einen sch\u00f6nen Spaziergang durch den Wald machen. Zur \u00dcbernachtung fahren wir auf den Cape Disappointment State Park. Dort laufen wir abends noch zum McKenzie Head Viewpoint. Bevor wir am n\u00e4chsten Morgen aufbrechen, quatschen wir noch mit unseren Platznachbarn, die seit drei Jahren mit einem Mercedes Sprinter reisen (www.newamericannomads.com). Wir besichtigen noch das Fort Columbia und dann verlassen wir Washington und fahren nach Oregon. Mit einem Stop im Waschsalon in Warrington geht es weiter nach Cannon Beach. Gerade als wir ein paar Minuten auf dem RV Parkplatz stehen, kommen auch Petra und Stephan angefahren. Zusammen laufen wir ein ordentliches St\u00fcck den Strand entlang und sitzen abends im Felix zusammen und quatschen. Als Petra noch zum Fotografieren am Strand ist, brechen wir auf. Wir wollen noch in die Library, da mal wieder administrative Dinge zu erledigen sind. Der Hwy 101 bietet jede Menge Aussichtsm\u00f6glichkeiten, die wir auch ausf\u00fchrlich nutzen. Am Hug Point laufen wir nochmal ein St\u00fcck am Strand entlang. Mit Stops am Neahkahnie Mountain Viewpoint, Manzanita Beach und dem Captain Gray Historical Marker erreichen wir unser Tagesziel, die Blue Heron French Cheese Co. in Tillamook; nat\u00fcrlich werden wir im dazugeh\u00f6renden Shop auch f\u00fcndig. Sp\u00e4ter stossen dann auch Stephan und Petra wieder zu uns. Da wir auf dem Gel\u00e4nde stehen bleiben d\u00fcrfen, ist unser Nachtplatz gesichert und wir verbringen wieder einen netten Abend zusammen; diesmal ist Albatros der Gastgeber. Am n\u00e4chsten Morgen fahren wir gemeinsam zur deutlich gr\u00f6\u00dferen Tillamook K\u00e4serei und dann fahren wir noch einkaufen, ehe es auf der K\u00fcstenstrasse weiter Richtung S\u00fcden geht. Am Cape Meares, wo wir den Leuchtturm und den Octopus Tree besichtigen, treffen wir Stepelix nochmal, dann verlieren wir uns aber leider aus den Augen. Aber wir haben die Oregon D\u00fcnen als Ziel in den n\u00e4chsten Tagen abgemacht. Nach einem Besuch auf dem Farmers\u2018 Market in Lincoln City stoppen wir an der Boiler Bay, wo eine ganze Gruppe Grauwale zu beobachten ist. Als wir sicher sind, dass wir genug Walfotos haben, fahren wir weiter zum Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Dort treffen wir auf einen Tierfotografen, der Falken im Visier hat. Am Lighthouse nehmen wir dann sp\u00e4ter an einem Ranger Walk teil. Wir sind die einzigen Teilnehmer und die junge Rangerin erkl\u00e4rt uns viele Sachen, die man aus dem \u201eStrandgut\u201c nach der Flut erkennen kann. In Newport treffen wir einen jungen Deutschen, der uns erz\u00e4hlt, dass er am Tag vorher Stepelix getroffen hat und die beiden deutlich vor uns sind. Also beschlie\u00dfen wir, etwas Gas zu geben und heute noch bis zu den D\u00fcnen durchzufahren. Dort treffen wir gegen 19:00h ein und es wird schon dunkel. Daher traut Ralph sich auch nicht zum Sandcamping in die D\u00fcnen zu fahren und von Stepelix ist auch nichts zu sehen. Im Stockdunkeln fahren wir den Hwy 101 wieder ein St\u00fcck zur\u00fcck, bis wir eine Parkbucht finden, wo wie \u00fcbernachten. Auch morgens sind Stephan und Petra nicht zu sehen. In der Hoffnung, sie doch noch zu finden, will Ralph den Weg an den Stellpl\u00e4tzen in den D\u00fcnen langfahren. Als er dann Allrad und Differentialsperren zuschaltet, hat er das Gef\u00fchl, dass der Schalter nicht richtig funktioniert. So trauen wir uns dann doch nicht in den Sand und fahren \u00fcber den Umpqua Leuchtturm und Coos Bay weiter bis zum Campingplatz am Humbug Mountain und quartieren uns dort f\u00fcr zwei Tage ein. Von hier aus geht es dann \u00fcber Golden Beach, wo wir am Visitor Center noch ein paar Apps und Karten laden, weiter bis zur \u201eGrenze\u201c nach Kalifornien.<\/p>\n

\nAfter spending four weeks \u2013 full of appointments \u2013 at home, we return to Seattle on September 12 in the evening and are picked up at the airport. Thanks again to Barbara for this. The first couple of days in North Bend are dedicated to shopping, re-arranging stuff, minor Unimog maintenance, fighting the jetlag and waiting for our USD. One day we rent a bay in a self-serve garage for the 100.000 km service. On the way to the garage, the switch for the all-wheel-drive \u201cexplodes\u201d again. Luckily it was only a tube that\u2019s gone loose. Ralph gets help for the service work by Stefan, whom I found in the internet by accident. Stepelix (Stephan, Petra and their Unimog Felix) are travelling through Canada and the US since 2015 and I realized that we live pretty close in Germany and in Canada twice missed us only by a couple of days. Luckily for them we were in Germany, when a part broke at Felix and we could bring it to the US. We agree to stay in contact and meet again in the next couple of days somewhere along the Oregon coast. Once our money arrived, we are on the way again. We change our initial plan, to tour the Olympic Peninsula, and drive directly from Seattle to the west coast, where we stay at the campground in Twin Harbor. In the morning we move onto highway 101 which runs all the ways down to Mexico along the west coast. We have a first stop and beach walk at North Cove. In the afternoon we are at Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, where we go for a nice hike through the forest. We stop for the night at Cape Disappointment State Park and go for a short hike to McKenzie Head viewpoint. Before we leave the next morning, we chat with our neighbors, who are travelling through the US since 3 years in a Mercedes Sprinter (www.newamericannomads.com).
\nWe visit Fort Columbia and then we leave Washington and move into Oregon.
\nWith a stop at the laundry in Warrington we continue to Cannon Beach. We just parked at the RV parking for a couple of minutes when Petra and Stephan arrive as well. Together we walk along the beach for a while and spend the evening together in Felix. Petra is still at the beach to take pictures when we already leave in the morning. We want to go to the library since we have a few administrative things to do. Back on hwy 101 there are plenty of viewpoints and we stop at a lot of them. At Hug Point we go for a stroll along the beach. With stops at Neahkahine Mountain Viewpoint, Manzanita Beach and Captain Gray Historical marker we finally reach the Blue Heron French Cheese Co. in Tillamook and \u2013 of course \u2013 find something in their shop. Later Stephan and Petra join us. We can stay for the night at the parking lot and spend another nice evening together; this time Albatros is the host. Together we drive to the much bigger Tillamook Cheese factory and then turn south again. At Cape Meares, where we visit the lighthouse and the Octopus tree, we meet Stepelix again but unfortunately loose contact thereafter. However, we agreed to go to the Oregon Dunes in the next couple of days. In Lincoln City we stop at the Farmers\u2019 Market and then again at Boiler Bay, where we can watch a group of grey whales for an extended period. Once we have enough whale pictures, we drive to the Yaquina Lighthouse, where we meet a guy who is watching falcons. At the lighthouse we are the only participants at a Ranger Walk. The young ranger explains a lot of things that she can derive from the things left at the beach after high tide. In Newport we meet a young German who tells us, that he saw Stepelix the day before and that Stephan and Petra are far ahead of us. We therefore decide to move a bit faster and drive all the way to the dunes. We arrive there around 7 pm and it is already getting dark. We can\u2019t see Stepelix and because of the light, Ralph doesn\u2019t want to drive into the dunes. It is already pitch dark when we turn back onto Hwy 101 to find a place for the night. In the morning we are back but still can\u2019t see Stephan and Petra. Hoping to find them, Ralph plans to drive the track in the dunes along the camp sites. However, when he turns on the 4WD and the gear locks, he has the feeling that the switch doesn\u2019t properly work and we don\u2019t want to take a risk. Instead we continue our trip and drive via Umpqua Lighthouse and Coos Bay to the campground at Humbug Mountain where we stay for two nights.
