Nachdem wir uns in Jackson von Christl & Werner verabschiedet haben, fahren wir zur\u00fcck bis Alpin und folgen dann dem Hwy 191 in den S\u00fcden. Hinter Rock Spring ist er als Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway ausgeschildert und wir \u00fcbernachten in einer Parkbucht auf einer der vielen kleinen Seitenstrassen mit toller Aussicht auf die Landschaft. Bevor wir den Damm erreichen, und wieder in Utah sind, machen wir noch einen Abstecher zum wirklich sehenswerten Flaming Gorge Reservoir Overlook. Kurz hinter dem Damm sehe ich ein Schild f\u00fcr den Red Cloud Loop und wir biegen kurz entschlossen ab. Das erste St\u00fcck ist der Loop eine nicht asphaltierte aber gut befahrbare Stra\u00dfe. Sp\u00e4ter wird er dann aber etwas ruppiger und er geht bis auf 3033 Meter hoch und ist teilweise schneebedeckt. Das hatten wir so nicht erwartet und das Fahren wird f\u00fcr Ralph anstrengend aber alleine f\u00fcr die Ausblicke mit irren Farben, Bergen und B\u00e4umen auf dem letzten St\u00fcck hat sich der Abstecher gelohnt. Nach einem kurzen Stop in Vernal entscheiden wir uns f\u00fcr die etwas weniger befahrene, \u00f6stliche Strecke, die uns von Dinosaur bis kurz hinter Loma ein paar Kilometer durch Colorado f\u00fchrt. Das letzte St\u00fcck bis zum Arches Nationalpark fahren wir \u00fcber den Hwy 128, der uns erst durch die Geisterstadt Cisco und dann durch ein bombastisches Tal f\u00fchrt. Am Eingang zum Nationalpark erfahren wir, dass der Campingplatz dieses Jahr wegen umfangreicher Bauarbeiten geschlossen ist und sonntags bis donnerstags alle Autos um sp\u00e4testens 19:00h aus dem Park raus sein m\u00fcssen. Wir folgen daher dem Rat des Rangers und fahren zum Canyonlands Natinoalpark und gehen dort auf den Campingplatz Horsethief. Am n\u00e4chstn Morgen h\u00f6ren wir, dass in Utah ein langes Wochenende ist und in Moab mehrere Mountainbike Veranstaltungen stattfinden und damit zu rechnen ist, dass abends alle Stellpl\u00e4tze f\u00fcr die n\u00e4chsten paar Tage belegt sein werden. Wir reservieren also noch einen Tag und fahren zum Island of Sky Visitor Center im Canyonlands Nationalpark und von dort weiter zum Grand View Point. Das letzte St\u00fcck laufen wir zu Fu\u00df und werden mit einer tollen Rundumsicht belohnt. Abends st\u00f6\u00dft Stepelix zu uns, wir hatten tags\u00fcber unsere Standorte ausgetauscht, und wir verbringen den Abend gemeinsam. Nach kurzer Absprache reserviert Stepelix den Stellplatz nochmal f\u00fcr eine Nacht. Tags\u00fcber trennen sich unsere Wege allerdings. Wir fahren zum Arches NP, wo sich am Eingang schon eine ordentliche Schlange gebildet hat. Als wir endlich durch die Kontrolle sind, fahren wir direkt bis zum Devil\u2019s Garden. Von dort laufen wir den Trail bis zum Double O Arch. Das erste St\u00fcck bis zum Landscape Arch ist noch einfach, aber danach wird der Weg schwieriger. Teilweise m\u00fcssen wir \u00fcber Steine klettern und \u00fcber schmale und glatte Bergr\u00fccken laufen, aber der Ausblick am Ende, ist der M\u00fche wert. Auf dem R\u00fcckweg machen wir dann noch kurze Abstecher zum Partition und Navajo Arch. Nachdem wir am n\u00e4chsten Tag einige Dinge in Moab erledigt haben, geht es wieder in Arches NP. Wir stoppen am Tower, Courthouse und Balanced Rock und laufen die kurze Strecke bis zum unteren und oberen Aussichtspunkt auf den Delicate Arch. Danach geht es noch zum Aussichtspunkt Garden of Eden, zum Double O Arch und dann zu den North und South Windows und dem Turret Arch. Es ist schon beeindruckend, wie die Natur hier diese B\u00f6gen geschaffen hat. Da wir am Campingplatz kein Handynetz haben, fahren wir am n\u00e4chsten Tag wieder nach Moab rein und rufen von dort John Marshall an. Er betreibt \u201eCoyote Adventure Safaris\u201c, ein Unternehmen, das Touren mit einem Unimog anbietet. Ralph und Stephan waren gestern schon mal an seinem Grundst\u00fcck, haben ihn aber nicht angetroffen. Leider kann er uns bez\u00fcglich einer Werkstatt zur Einstellung der Ventile auch nicht richtig weiterhelfen. Da er gerade selber einen U500 zum Camper ausbaut, ist er aber sehr an unseren Fahrzeugen interessiert und kommt am Visitor Center vorbei. Nachdem wir eine Weile miteinander gequatscht haben, fragt Stephan ihn, wo wir am Besten Fahrzeuge in den Slickrocks beobachten k\u00f6nnen. Darauf hin fragt uns John, ob wir Lust auf eine kurze Tour mit ihm und einem seiner Unimogs durch die Slickrocks haben. Das lassen wir uns nat\u00fcrlich nicht entgehen und wir verbringen einen einmaligen Nachmittag mit ihm. Abends gehen wir dann noch alle zusammen in der Moab Brewery essen. Wir \u00fcbernachten diesmal etwas au\u00dferhalb von Moab. Da uns auch die Werkstatt, die John uns empfohlen hat, nicht weiterhelfen kann und die Self-Serve-Garage wohl nur nach vorheriger Reservierung ge\u00f6ffnet ist, verabschieden wir uns wieder von Stepelix und fahren weiter Richtung Bryce Canyon.<\/p>\n

English Version (no translation of German text)<\/strong>
\nAfter we said goodbye to Christl & Werner in Jackson, we drove back to Alpin and then followed Hwy 191 south. Past Rock Spring this is the Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway and we find an overnight spot in a layby with an awesome view of the countryside on one of the many side streets. Shortly before we reach the dam, and cross into Utah again, we take a short detour to the Flaming Gorge Reservoir Overlook. After we crossed the dam I see a sign for the Red Cloud Loop and we follow it. The 1st part is an unpaved but still good gravel road. Later on it gets a bit more rough, is partly covered with snow and has a peak elevation of 9,950 ft. This is something we did not expect and driving is exhausting for Ralph. However, the great views of the mountains and trees with incredible colors on the last section were worth the drive. After a short stop in Vernal we decide to take the less busy eastern route, that leads us from Dinosaur to Loma a couple of miles through Colorado. For the last part towards Arches NP we take Hwy 128, which brings us to the Ghost Town of Cisco and then into an incredible valley. At the entrance to Arches NP we learn, that the campground is closed and that from Sunday to Thursday all cars need to leave the park by 7 pm due to extensive reconstruction work. We therefore follow the advice of the ranger and drive towards Canyonlands NP and pull up for the night at Horsethief Campground. In the morning we are being told, that it is a long weekend in Utah and there are a couple of mountain bike races in Moab and it is to be expected, that all campgrounds will be full from Thursday night onwards. We therefore reserve the site for another night before we leave for the Island of the Sky Visitor Center in Canyonlands NP. From there we continue to the Grand View Point. We hike the last mile and are rewarded with a really great outlook. Later in the evening Petra & Stephan (Stepelix) join us at the campground and we spend a nice evening together. In the morning we shortly discuss our options regarding a place for the night and then Stephan & Petra reserve the site for another night. During the day we go separate ways. We drive to Arches NP and are greeted by a long row of cars at the entrance station. Once we are inside the park, we directly drive to Devil\u2019s Garden from where we take the hike to the Double O Arch. The first section \u2013 up to Landscape Arch \u2013 is relatively easy walking but then it gets a bit more difficult. Partly we need to climb over stones or walk over narrow summits. However, the view that awaits us at the end of the trail is worth the effort. On the way back we take the short detours to Partition Arch and Navajo Arch. After we dealt with a few things in Moab in the morning we drive back to Arches NP the next day. We stop at Tower, Courthouse and Balanced Rock and hike the short trail to lower and upper Delicate Arch viewpoints. Then we drive to the Garden of Eden viewpoint and Double Arch. Finally we hike to North and South Windows and Turret Arch. It really is impressive how nature formed the arches in this area. Since we do not have mobile reception at Horsethief we drive to Moab again in the morning and call John Marshall. He is owner of \u201eCoyote Adventure Safaris\u201c, a company that offers off-road trips with Unimogs. Ralph and Stephan drove by his place yesterday morning but he wasn\u2019t there. Unfortunately he can\u2019t really help us with a recommendation for a garage that can do the valve settings. Since he is currently converting a Unimog U500 into a camper he is interested in ours and drops by at the Visitor Center. After talking to him for a while Stephan asks him if he could recommend a good place to watch and photograph the guys driving their ATWs through the Slickrocks. John then offers to give us a short tour with one of his Unimogs. Off course we accept his offer and we spend an unforgettable afternoon with him in the Slickrocks and together we have a nice dinner at the Moab Brewery in the evening. We spend the night shortly outside Moab. Since the one mechanic that John recommended can\u2019t help us with the valves and the self-serve-garage is only accessible by reservation we say goodbye to Stepelix again and drive towards Bryce Canyon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
