Nachdem der Unimog jetzt gut versorgt ist, geht es weiter nach San Franzisko. Die Aussichtspunkte im Norden der Golden Gate Bridge sind hoffnungslos \u00fcberlaufen. Wir fahren weiter bis zu einem Visitor Center, dass aber wegen Thanksgiving geschlossen ist. Auf dem Parkplatz dort spricht uns ein Ranger an. Als wir sagen, dass wir nicht so recht wissen, wo wir \u00fcbernachten k\u00f6nnen, f\u00fchrt er uns zu einem sch\u00f6nen Platz in Sausalito direkt unterhalb der Br\u00fccke und wir erleben dort einen tollen Sonnenuntergang. Wir stehen um kurz nach 6.00 h auf, denn seit ca. 4.00 h ert\u00f6nt regelm\u00e4\u00dfig das Nebelhorn. Daf\u00fcr lassen sich dann interessante Fotos der Br\u00fccke im Nebel machen. Unsere Versuche, einen ge\u00f6ffneten Waschsalon bzw. eine B\u00fccherei zu finden sind wegen Thanksgiving auch vergeblich. Also fahren wir wieder zu den Aussichtspunkten. Am letzten finden wir noch einen Stellplatz und kurze Zeit sp\u00e4ter stellt sich ein Ehepaar aus Deutschland, die mit einem Mietcamper unterwegs sind, neben uns. Wir quatschen relativ lange ehe die beiden weiter m\u00fcssen. Nach einigem Hin und Her fahren wir auch r\u00fcber, einmal quer durch die Stadt bis zum Lands End Beach, wo wir ein St\u00fcck laufen, und dann wieder zur\u00fcck auf die andere Seite zu dem Stellplatz. Wir stehen wieder fr\u00fch auf und fahren auch wieder auf die andere Seite. In Presidio stellen wir unser Auto am YMCA ab und nehmen den Shuttle Bus in die Stadt. Dort laufen wir ein bi\u00dfchen durch die Stra\u00dfen bis zum Union Square. Hier ist einer der Wendepunkte f\u00fcr die Cable Cars. Wir wollen eigentlich ein St\u00fcck damit fahren, aber $ 7 ist uns dann doch zu viel und es steht eine Schlange bis zum n\u00e4chsten Block. Wir laufen also zu Fu\u00df weiter bis zur Fisherman\u2019s Wharf. Dort h\u00e4lt uns allerdings auch nichts lange. Durch den Feiertag ist die Stadt einfach zu voll und das ist nichts mehr f\u00fcr uns. Also laufen wir wieder zur Bushaltestelle und fahren zur\u00fcck zum Auto. \u00dcber den Hwy 101 geht es am n\u00e4chsten Tag weiter nach Pablo Alto und anschlie\u00dfend wollen wir \u00fcber die Hwys 280 und 85 Richtung Santa Cruz an die K\u00fcste. Da der Hwy 85 aber auf einmal f\u00fcr Fahrzeuge \u00fcber 5 t gesperrt ist, m\u00fcssen wir \u00fcber den sehr bergigen und kurvigen Hwy 17 ausweichen. In Seascape \u00fcbernachten wir in Meeresn\u00e4he auf einem Parkplatz an einem Tenniscenter. Die Nacht war sehr st\u00fcrmisch. Durch eine sch\u00f6ne Wohnsiedlung fahren wir zum Hwy 2 und folgen ihm bis Monterrey. Dort machen wir einen Abstecher nach Pacific Cove, wo die Monarch Schmetterlinge in einem kleinen Park \u00fcberwintern. Vor Ort sind freiwillge Helfer, die zwei Teleskope aufgestellt haben. Wenn man sie dann dadurch gesehen hat, bekommt man auch ein Gef\u00fchl daf\u00fcr, sie mit blo\u00dfem Auge zu sehen. Immer an Thanksgiving werden die Schmetterlinge gez\u00e4hlt. Wir erfahren, dass es durchaus Schwankungen gibt, aber dieses Jahr ist einer der Tiefpunkte. Es wurden gerade mal knapp 3.000 gez\u00e4hlt. Im letzten Jahr waren es noch 15.000 und 1997 sogar \u00fcber 1,5 Millionen. F\u00fcr die Nacht checken wir uns auf dem Campingplatz am \u201eMessegel\u00e4nde\u201c ein. Der n\u00e4chste Tag geht f\u00fcr Arztbesuche und Medizinbesorgung drauf, denn bei mir wird ein Bandwurm diagnostiziert. So fahren wir abends nur noch ein St\u00fcck weiter s\u00fcdlich bis Carmel, wo wir auf einem Safeway Parkplatz \u00fcbernachten. Ab 6.30h wird es auf dem Parkplatz laut und so sind wir wieder fr\u00fch unterwegs. Nachdem wir unser W\u00e4sche gewaschen haben, geht es \u00fcber den Hwy 1 an der K\u00fcste entlang. Die Stra\u00dfe ist kurvig und geht zum Teil bergauf und bergab. Die Aussichten sind wieder toll und wir halten mehrfach an. F\u00fcr die Nacht gehen wir auf den Limekiln State Park Campground, mit direktem Zugang zum Strand und wir erleben einen sch\u00f6nen Sonnenuntergang. Wir wussten, dass der Hwy 1 bei Gorda wegen eines Erdrutsches gesperrt ist. Daher sind wir dann am Morgen ziemlich \u00fcberrascht, dass die andere Richtung nun auch gesperrt ist. Da wir aber sowieso \u00fcber eine Nebenstrasse, die Naciemento-Fergusson Road, ins Landesinnere zur\u00fcck fahren wollten, st\u00f6rt uns das nicht. Diese Strecke, von der uns eine Frau ganz dringend abgeraten hat, weil sie ganz f\u00fcrchterlich w\u00e4re, stellt sich dann als tolle Strecke raus. Sie ist zwar teilweise sehr steil und eng, bietet aber immer wieder tolle Ausblicke und f\u00fchrt teilweise durch sch\u00f6ne Waldst\u00fccke. Anfangs stehen ca. 2 Meter hohe Gr\u00e4ser an den H\u00e4ngen. Sp\u00e4ter \u00e4ndert sich die Vegetation und es wachesen Agaven neben der Stra\u00dfe. Nach 42 km sind wir wieder auf einem Hwy. In Paso Robles k\u00f6nnen wir unseren Passport America wieder einsetzen und wir buchen uns auf einem sehr gepflegten RV Platz ein. Unser Ziel f\u00fcr heute ist die Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. Das ist ein ca. 6 Meilen langer Strand mit D\u00fcnen, in dem die Amerikaner sich mit ihren OHVs\/ATVs (Off-Highway-Vehicles \/ All-Terrain-Vehicles) austoben. M\u00e4nner, Frauen und Kinder in allen Altersklassen sind unterwegs. Veranstalter karren morgens und abends bestimmt 500 Leihfahrzeuge an den Strand. Unser Navi schickt uns erst falsch, aber wir finden den Eingang dann schlie\u00dflich doch. Dort treffen wir dann auch Gabi und Norbert aus Gelsenkirchen wieder. Nach kurzer Besichtigung des Strandes und Begutachtung der Sandbeschaffenheit, fahren wir ca. 2 Meilen in den Park rein und stellen uns kurz vor die D\u00fcnen. Wir sehen Gabi und Norbert nochmal, aber da sie keinen Allrad haben, fahren sie wieder zur\u00fcck. Abends weihen wir dann endlich unseren neuen Grill ein. Wir beschlie\u00dfen, noch einen Tag hier zu bleiben. Bis ca. 15:00h erledigt Ralph alle m\u00f6glichen Wartungsarbeiten am Unimog. Dabei wird er mehrmals von neugierigen Amerikanern angesprochen. Eine Gruppe gibt uns dann noch Tipps bez\u00fcglich neuer Reifen und schenkt uns eine Ladung Feuerholz. Nachdem wir dann die ca. zwei Meilen zum Eingang gelaufen sind, um unser Ticket f\u00fcr den zweiten Tag zu kaufen, sitzen wir abends bis 20.00h am Lagerfeuer.<\/p>\n

\nNow that our Unimog has been taken care off, we move on to San Francisco. It\u2019s Thanksgiving weekend and the overlooks north of the Golden Gate Bridge are overflowing with visitors. We follow the road to a visitor center which is closed for the holiday. However, a Ranger asks us, if we know where to go. When we tell him, that we are not yet sure he leads us to a nice parking place in Sausalito from where we can see the bridge and we can watch a stunning sunset. At 4 am the fog horn started blowing. Therefore we are already up at 6 am and take pictures of the sunrise and the fog over the bridge. Our efforts to find an open laundry and library are not successful due to Thanksgiving and we again try our luck with the overlooks. At the last one we are lucky to find a parking space. Shortly after another German couple, travelling with a rental camper, joins us and we talk for a while until they have to move on. Finally we decide to cross the bridge as well. We drive across the city to Land\u2019s End Beach, where we go for a walk and then back to Sausalito for the night. In the morning we are up early and cross the bridge again. In Presidio we park our car at the YMCA and take the shuttle into town. We walk to the center until we reach Union Square. This is one of the points where the cable cars change direction. Initially we planned to hop onto one of the cars for a bit but $ 7 is pretty expensive and people are queuing all the way to the next block. We walk to Fisherman\u2019s Wharf but there is nothing that keeps us long. Due to the holiday everything is overcrowded and that doesn\u2019t appeal to us anymore. Therefore we take the bus back to Presidio, where we stay on the parking lot for the night. Via Hwy 101 we drive to Pablo Alto. From there we planned to go via Hwy 280 and 85 towards Santa Cruz at the coast. However, at some point Hwy 85 is closed for cars above 5 t and we need to take a detour via the pretty hilly and winding Hwy 17. In Seascape we stop close to the coast at a parking lot of a tennis center and stay for a stormy night. Through a nice living area we drive to Hwy 2 and then all the way to Monterrey, where we take a short detour to Pacific Cove, where the monarch butterflies have a sanctuary for the winter. Initially we don\u2019t see them but there are volunteers who set up two binoculars and once we\u2019ve seen the butterflies through the, we get a feeling and can detect them directly. We learn that each year at Thanksgiving they do a count. It is normal to have up and downs but this year was one of the really bad ones. They counted only approximately 3,000 whilst last year it was a count of 15,000. In 1997 they even had more than 1.5 million. We spend the night at the campground near the fair center. The next day is fully packed with doctor visits and getting medicine since I was diagnosed with a tape worm. We only drive a short distance to Carmel, where we stay on a Safeway parking lot. It gets noisy around 6.30 am and therefore we start early. After a stop at a laundry we drive along the coast on Hwy 1. Again the road is winding with some ups and downs and we are rewarded with impressive views. We check in at Limekiln Park State Campground for the night and have direct beach access where we watch a beautiful sunset. We already knew that the highway was closed due to a landslide at Gorda but we are really surprised in the morning that now it is closed in the other direction as well. Since we had planned to take the Naciemento-Fergusson Road to avoid driving back, this doesn\u2019t impact our trip. Although this road is partly steep and narrow it is very beautiful and leads we don\u2019t understand why a woman in Monterrey said we shouldn\u2019t take it since it was dangerous. At the beginning there are approximately 2 meter high grass plants but later the vegetation changes and we see agaves. After 42 km we are back on a hwy. In Paso Robles we check into a very nice RV park. Thanks to our Passport America we get 50% discount. Our next destination is the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. This is an approximately 6 miles long beach with dunes, where the Americans \u201cplay\u201d with their OHVs\/ATVs (Off-Highway-Vehicles \/ All-Terrain-Vehicles). Men, women and kids of all ages are in the dunes. Professional companies bring about 500 rental vehicles to the beach every morning. Initially our GPS sends us to a wrong place but we find the right entrance station, where we meet Gabi and Norbert from Gelsenkirchen again. After a short walk along the beach to check the quality of the sand tracks we drive approx. 2 miles and park just below the dunes. We see Gabi and Norbert again but since they don\u2019t have 4WD they turn back. In the evening we use our new barbecue for the first time. We decide to stay for another day. Until 3 pm Ralph is busy with servicing the Unimog. A couple of times curious Americans stop to talk to him. A group of them provides us with some tips where we can buy new tires and they give us a bunch of fire wood. After we walked the 2 miles to the entrance station to buy the ticket for the next day, we spend the evening at our camp fire.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
