English Version (no translation of German text)

When we leave Potrero de los Funes our first stop is at the visitor center in El Volcan. We are looking for information about mines or quarries that can be visited and they send us to El Trapiche. From there they send us to La Florida. Additionally I found something in maps.me pointing to a quary close to La Florida. The drive along the reservoir is pretty nice but we don’t get any further with what we are looking for. During our lunch break at a memorial Ralph finds a few nice stones and we then decide to turn back and drive to San Luis, where we find a place for the night outside the Velodromo in Parque Cuatro Centenario. After a short walk through the park we work on our blog. In the morning it is rainy and windy. We leave for San Rafael at around 10:30h. The drive via Ruta is pretty boring. Every 5 km they have a mast for SOS WiFi. The only variety is the „border crossing“ between the provinces of San Luis and Mendoza. We need to stop and they ask if we have any fresh fruit or vegetables. We eat two pears at the checkpoint and leave the other two together with our two avocados at the station. We thought, this was the highlight oft he day until we see a Mercedes Benz Sprinter Camper besides the road roughly 50 km before Monte Comán. Of course we stop and Veronica and Hernán explain that they have problems and are losing motor oil. We need to go to the gas station in Monte Comán anyhow – we realized that we forgot to fill up our diesel – and therefore we tow the Sprinter. At the gas station Hernán talks to two motorbikers and they immediately start phoning and recommend a mechanic in San Rafael. Since we are going there as well, we tow them for another 50 km. When we reach the city limits of San Rafael we meet the two motorbikers again. They explain that we should follow them and leave the Sprinter at the house of one oft hem. The shop will be closed anyhow because it is Sunday. Once we get there, they invite all of us for pizza and salad (and of course red vine). We are totally overwhelmed by so much hospitality. Carlos and Adriana start looking for the mechanic and he comes to their place and checks the damage. Until nearly 21:00h we sit together and then we retreat into our car. To spend a couple of hours communicating with hand and feet, google-translate and my basic Spanish knowledge is pretty exhausting for us. Carlos and Adriana invited us to have breakfast at their place and when we get up, we hear that obviously somebody broke into the sprinter (or at least tried to) and the gas bottle, which was stored on the roof, was stolen. And we didn’t hear anything. From San Rafael we continue via Ruta 173 through Valle Grande and Canyon Atuel to El Nihuil. The first couple of km along the river a very nice and pretty much developed for tourists, but since it is still pre-season, it is still relatively quiet. The further we follow Ruta 173 the more we like it. Most oft he time it is only gravel road but good to drive and there are new awsome views, with mountains glowing in all kind of colors in the sun, after each corner. We agree to have an early stop and to stay for an extra day to look through the dry river bed for some stones. When we move on we see an electricity plant at one oft he reservoirs and our first thought is, that it can be visited. 3 big and 2 small tour busses are parked there. Then we see that there are some locals with souvenirs. They offer minerals as well and we buy some. This time we pay roughtly € 1.60 for 3 beautiful stones. The street then leads us to the top oft he mountains and we stop at a viewing point just outside of El Nihuil before we finally head to the municipal campground. Two Argentinian couples are already there and just preparing to go fishing. Since they still have a lot of fish, we are given a big portion first. In the morning one of the Argentinians brings us a glas of self made peach marmelade and after a short chat we head off. We are back in pampa country but have the first glimpses of snow covered mountain peaks in the distance. The museum of El Diamate Salines is closed but we can take some pictures and when Ralph gets out of the car, it is so windy that a bolt, that normally keeps the door from opening too far, snaps. After a lunch break in El Sonsondado we drive on to Malargüe, where we stop at the municipal camping once again.

For English version click on “BEITRAG LESEN/READ THE POST” and then scroll to bottom …

Beitrag lesenArgentinien: San Luis – San Rafael – Valle Grande & Canyon Atuel – Malargüe

[1
