\nDa wir immer noch keine chilenischen Pesos haben, suchen wir an der Grenze die \u201eWechselstube\u201c auf. Die entpuppt sich als Bistro und bietet einen entsprechend schlechten Kurs. Statt ca. 850 CLP pro Euro gibt es hier nur 750 CLP. Damit wir \u00fcberhaupt was an Bargeld haben, tauschen wir z\u00e4hneknirschend 50 \u20ac, bevor wir weiter Richtung Cerro Sombrero fahren. Hier wollen wir nochmal die guten Duschen nutzen. Gegen 19:45h schauen wir auf die Wettervorhersage und sehen, dass f\u00fcr morgen Sturm angesagt ist. Wir wissen, dass die F\u00e4hre \u00fcber die Magellan Stra\u00dfe bei Sturm nicht verkehrt. Also \u00fcberlegen wir kurz und beschlie\u00dfen, die F\u00e4hre noch heute zu nehmen. Wir springen nur schnell noch unter die Dusche und fahren los. Ich treibe Ralph ein bisschen an und er holt alles aus Albatros raus, was vertretbar ist, und so schaffen wir es als vorletztes Fahrzeug auf die F\u00e4hre um 21:15h. Wir h\u00e4tten zwar auch sp\u00e4ter fahren k\u00f6nnen, die F\u00e4hre f\u00e4hrt bis 2:00h morgens, aber dann w\u00e4ren wir erst im Dunklen angekommen und h\u00e4tten noch einen Stellplatz suchen m\u00fcssen. Die Stellplatzsuche stellt sich auch im D\u00e4mmerlicht schon als etwas problematisch raus und so stellen wir uns schlie\u00dflich auf einen \u201eEstacionamiento\u201c direkt neben der Stra\u00dfe. Da diese nur zur F\u00e4hre f\u00fchrt, ist die Nacht einigerma\u00dfen ruhig. Am n\u00e4chsten Tag fahren wir mehr oder weniger non-Stopp bis Punta Arenas. Lediglich in San Gregorio, einer Geisterstadt, machen wir einen kurzen Fotostopp. In Punta Arenas fahren wir dann direkt zu \u201eVictor\u2019s Place\u201c, wo wir die n\u00e4chsten Tage \u00fcbernachten. Hier steht auch die Familie Sch\u00f6n, die wir schon in der N\u00e4he von Rosario getroffen hatten. Sie h\u00e4ngen seit \u00fcber 2 Wochen wegen eines technischen Problems hier fest. Victor, der den Platz betreut ist sehr hilfsbereit und besorgt uns sofort jemanden, der den Steinschlag in unserer Windschutzscheibe am Platz repariert. Den n\u00e4chsten Tag verbringen wir auch am Platz. Ralph stellt (mal wieder) die Ventile ein und ich putze, wasche und backe. Dann laufen wir noch einen Tag in die Stadt. Wir waren schon von anderen Reisenden vorgewarnt, dass einige Gesch\u00e4fte im Ort nach gewaltt\u00e4tigen Demonstrationen verbarrikadiert sind. Etwas merkw\u00fcrdig finde ich dann die Ausk\u00fcnfte in der Tourist Information. Als wir fragen, was im Ort sehenswert ist, werden uns mehrere Museen auf dem Stadtplan markiert. Dann kommt aber die Info, dass die alle wegen der Ausschreitungen auch geschlossen sind. Letztlich laufen wir nur \u00fcber den interessanten Friedhof, der eine ganz andere Kultur im Umgang mit den Toten wiederspiegelt, etwas durch die Innenstadt und dann \u00fcber den Aussichtspunkt \u201eCerro del Cruz\u201c zur\u00fcck zum Platz. Einzelne sch\u00f6ne alte H\u00e4user sind zu sehen, aber wir fragen uns, ob die Stadt den Abstecher von hin und zur\u00fcck ca. 100 km wirklich wert war. Die Fahrt nach Puerto Natales machen wir bei diesigem Wetter. Erst am Nachmittag kl\u00e4rt es etwas auf. Der Unimog hatte heute keine richtige Power. Ralph stellt sp\u00e4ter fest, dass er falsche Werte bei den Ventilen eingestellt hat. Wir finden unseren Stellplatz beim Sportzentrum und laufen nochmal in die Stadt. Am n\u00e4chsten Tag haben wir uns mit Gerhild & Sepp verabredet. Die beiden hatten wir ganz am Anfang unserer Reise ja schon im Hotel kennengelernt. Sie sind erst in den Norden gefahren und jetzt auf dem Weg runter nach Ushuaia. Abends schaut Ralph nochmal nach den Ventilen, wird aber nicht fertig, bevor es dunkel wird. Am Morgen macht Ralph erstmal die Ventileinstellung fertig und bevor wir in den Nationalpark Torres del Paine fahren, geht es noch zum Supermarkt. Aber schon nach ca. 1-2 km, als wir bergauf fahren, macht der Motor ganz komische Ger\u00e4usche. Das h\u00f6rt sich nicht gut an und Ralph h\u00e4lt am Stra\u00dfenrand mitten in der Stadt. Es stellt sich dann heraus, dass ein Ventil lose ist. Also, die ganze Prozedur noch einmal. Gegen 16h ist er fertig und der Motor l\u00e4uft wieder normal. Allerdings ist es uns jetzt zu sp\u00e4t, um noch in den Park zu fahren, da heute schon als 1. Tag gez\u00e4hlt h\u00e4tte. Wir beschlie\u00dfen, zur Laguna Sofia zu fahren und dort zu \u00fcbernachten. Am n\u00e4chsten Morgen haben wir ein d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu. Ca. 200-300 Meter, nachdem wir losgefahren sind und es bergauf geht, gibt der Motor wieder \u00fcble Ger\u00e4usche von sich; wieder ist ein Ventil lose. Auf schmaler Schotterstra\u00dfe bleiben wir stehen und beheben den Schaden. Nachdem wir dann endlich weiterfahren k\u00f6nnen, ist unser erster Stopp an den H\u00f6hlen des Milodyon, einem Riesenfaultier, das hier gefunden wurde. Der Eintritt ist uns aber mit CLP 8000 doch etwas zu teuer und wir fahren weiter bis kurz vor den Eingang zum Nationalpark, wo wir gegen 15:00h einen sch\u00f6nen Stellplatz an einem Wasserfall finden. Nach einer ruhigen Nacht kommen wir im dritten Anlauf endlich in den Torres del Paine und wir fahren \u00fcber sehr schlechte Stra\u00dfen zur Laguna Grey. Dort machen wir nachmittags noch eine kleine Wanderung zu einem Aussichtspunkt, von dem man bei sch\u00f6nem Wetter den Gletscher Grey sehen kann. Leider spielt das Wetter aber nicht mit. Es ist sehr windig, regnerisch und daher k\u00f6nnen wir den Gletscher mehr erahnen als sehen. Nach 2 Stunden sind wir zur\u00fcck am Auto. Die Strecke war zwar nur knapp 5 km, aber der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Teil \u00fcber Sand und losen Kies und die letzten 500 Meter ziemlich bergauf auf steinigem Weg. Das hat uns f\u00fcr den ersten Tag gereicht. Wir \u00fcbernachten auf dem Parkplatz und machen uns morgens auf den Weg zum \u201eSalto Grande\u201c. Vom Parkplatz aus laufen wir zu den Wasserf\u00e4llen und weiter zum \u201eMirador Cuernos del Torre\u201c. Die Strecke geht eine Stunde lang immer leicht bergauf und bergab. Am Ende schauen wir dann wieder auf die Torres, die in Wolken verschwinden. Auf dem R\u00fcckweg f\u00e4ngt es dann noch an, leicht zu regnen und so sind wir froh, als wir wieder am Auto sind. Unseren Stellplatz f\u00fcr die Nacht finden wir an der Laguna Azul, von der man einen tollen Ausblick auf die Torres h\u00e4tte, wenn es nicht so diesig w\u00e4re. Zum Abschied zeigt sich der Park dann doch noch von seiner guten Seite. Am Morgen haben wir einen tollen Ausblick von unserem Stellplatz und auch auf der Stra\u00dfe raus, gibt es mehrere sch\u00f6ne Aussichtspunkte. Kurz nachdem wir aus dem Park raus sind, erreichen wir bei Cerro Castillo die Grenze. Auch hier ist die Abwicklung wieder unproblematisch und wir fahren ohne gro\u00dfe Kontrolle wieder nach Argentinien rein. Der Unimog macht \u00fcbrigens seit dem letzten Einstellen keine Probleme mehr und l\u00e4uft gut.<\/p>\n

\nSince we still don\u2019t have any Chilean Pesos, we stop at the \u201cmoney exchange\u201d at the border. This in fact is a bistro and they offer a very bad rate. Insteadt of approx. 850 CLP per Euro they only give 750 CLP. In order to have some cash, we grudgingly exchange 5\u20ac and then continue to Cerro Sombrero. We want to have a nice hot shower again. Around 7:45pm we see that strong winds are forecasted for the next day. We know that the ferry over the Magellan Strait is not running during storms. Therefore, we decide to already take the ferry tonight. We just have a quick shower and then I drive Ralph and he gets everything out of Albatros that is acceptable but we arrive just in time before the ferry at 9:15pm leaves. We could have taken another one, they go until 2am, but then would have arrived in the dark and still needed to find a place for the night. Since it is already twilight, to find a place is not easy even now. Finally, we stop at an \u201cEstacionamento\u201d directly besides the road. Since this only leads to the ferry, we have a relatively quiet night. The next day we drive more or less non-stop until we reach Punta Arenas. Only in San Gregorio, a ghost town, we stop for some photos. In Punta Arenas we directly drive to \u201cVictor\u2019s Place\u201d, where we spend the next couple of days. The Sch\u00f6n family, whom we already met near Rosario, is here as well. They are already stuck here for more than 2 weeks due to technical problems. Victor, who runs the site, is very helpful and takes care of a mechanic to come to the site and repair our wind screen. We spend the next day at the site. Whilst Ralph adjusts the valves (once again) I am busy with cleaning, washing and baking. One day we walk into town. We had been warned by other travelers that most shops in town have barricades after violent protests. I found it a bit strange, that at the tourist office they marked all the museums on our map to then tell us, that they are all closed due to the riots. So, the most interesting thing to do is to visit the cemetery, where we can experience the totally different culture, and walk to the viewpoint \u201cCerro del Cruz\u201d. In town we see a few nice old houses but we ask wonder, if the town really was worth the approx. 100 km back and forth. When we drive to Puerto Natales the weather is pretty misty until it clears a bit in the afternoon. Our Unimog doesn\u2019t have a lot of power today and Ralph later on realizes that he used the wrong values for the valve settings. We find a place at the sport center and take a walk into town. For the next day we arranged to meet Gerhild and Sepp, whom we met at the beginning of our journey at the hotel. They drove North first and are now on their way to Ushuaia. In the evening Ralph works on the valves again, but doesn\u2019t finalize his work before it gets dark. He continues in the morning and then we drive into town for some shopping before we head to Torres del Paine National Park. But already after 1-2 km, when we drive uphill, the motor sounds pretty bad. It doesn\u2019t sound good and Ralph pulls of besides the street in the middle of town. One of the valves is loose and he has to go through the whole procedure again. He\u2019s done around 4pm but it is too late to drive into the park; it would already count as the 1st day. We decide to drive to Laguna Sofia and spend the night there. In the morning we have a d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu. Approx. 200-300 meters after we left and while we are driving uphill, the motor sounds bad again; another valve is loose. We stop on a small gravel road and fix the motor. After we finally continue, our 1st stop is at the cavern of the Milodyon, a giant sloth, that was found there. We feel, the entrance fee (CLP 8000) is a bit high and drive on until we find a nice place for the night at a waterfall shortly before the park entrance. After a quiet night we finally reach Torres del Paine. Via bad roads we drive to Laguna Grey, and in the afternoon, we go for a short walk to a viewpoint, from where one can see the glacier Grey when the weather is nice. Unfortunately, the weather is not good. It is windy and rainy and we can rather guess than see the glacier. After 2 hours we are back at the car. Although the trail was only slightly less than 5 km, it was mostly via sand and loose gravel and the last 500 meters where steep, and therefore it was enough for today. We spend the night at the parking lot and drive to \u201cSalto Grande\u201d in the morning. From the parking area we walk to the waterfall and then continue to \u201cMirador Cuernos del Torre\u201d. For approx. 1 hour the leads slightly up and down and at the end we see the Torres; covered in clouds. On the way back it starts to drizzle and we\u2019re glad when we are back. Our place for the night is at Laguna Azul, with a beautiful view of the Torres, if it wasn\u2019t so cloudy. On the last day the weather clears and we enjoy the view from our site. On the way out of the park we have a few nice viewpoints as well. Shortly after we left the park, we reach the border at Cerro Castillo. Again, the process is easy and we can pass into Argentina without a major inspection.
