Am Abend unserer Ankunft in Salta bekomme ich eine WhatsApp Nachricht von Veronica, dass sie und Hernan auch in Salta sind. Wir hatten die beiden 2019 ja fast 100 km abgeschleppt und waren seither in Kontakt geblieben. Am Morgen fahren wir mit dem Taxi zu einer W\u00e4scherei in der Innenstadt und laufen dann zum Zentralen Platz, wo wir die beiden kurz Treffen. Wir verabreden uns, am n\u00e4chsten Abend Essen zu gehen, daraus wird dann aber leider doch nichts. Nachdem wir uns dann noch eine Buskarte gekauft haben, erkunden wir die Stadt 3 Tage lang zu Fu\u00df und mit Bussen. Salta ist eine recht lebhafte Stadt, aber auch hier sehen wir immer wieder den krassen Unterschied zwischen toll renovierten und fast verfallenen Geb\u00e4uden. Es gibt einige Kirchen zu sehen und wir besuchen das Museum M.A.A.M, in dem im Wechsel eine von drei Kindermumien ausgestellt wird. Die Kinder wurden als heilige Opfer auf den Vulkan gebracht, so bet\u00e4ubt, dass sie eingeschlafen und dann friedlich an Sauerstoffmangel verstorben sind. Die Fahrt mit der Seilbahn auf den Aussichtspunkt k\u00f6nnen wir leider nicht machen, da diese gerade wegen Wartungsarbeiten au\u00dfer Betrieb ist. Von Salta fahren wir auf der RN51 in den Norden. Unser erstes Ziel ist Santa Rosa de Tastil. Ich habe im Reisef\u00fchrer gelesen, dass der Ort auf 2.600 Metern liegt. Das war allerdings ein Irrtum. Da steht n\u00e4mlich, dass er 2.600 Meter h\u00f6her als Salta liegt. Bei 3.200 \/ 3.500 Meter bekommen wir beide leichte Kopfschmerzen (mehr wie ein Druckgef\u00fchl). Am n\u00e4chsten Morgen besichtigen wir die arch\u00e4ologische Ausgrabungsst\u00e4tte einer Inkasiedlung, die nochmal 100 Meter h\u00f6her (3.250 Meter) liegt. Auf dem Weg zu den Salinas Grandes \u00fcbernachten wir noch einmal an einer verlassenen Siedlung neben der RN79 (ex RN40). Auf den Salzsee d\u00fcrfen wir dann nur mit einer F\u00fchrerin. Insgesamt 4 Fahrzeuge fahren hinter ihr her. Wir machen 2 Stopps. Beim ersten wird die Entstehung des Sees und die Gewinnung und Verarbeitung des Salzes erkl\u00e4rt. Auch hier leider wieder nur in Spanisch. Wir verstehen daher vieles nicht. Danach haben wir ein paar Minuten Zeit, um Fotos zu machen. Die F\u00fchrerin gibt Tipps und bietet an, Fotos mit unserer Kamera zu machen. Der zweite Stopp ist am \u201eAuge des Sees\u201c, einer Ansammlung von 3 kleinen Seen. Hier macht die F\u00fchrerin dann pro Fahrzeug ein paar Aufnahmen mit der Spiegelung des Sees. \u00dcber die RN52 fahren wir \u00fcber einen 4.170 Meter hohen Pass bis kurz vor Purmamarca. Die letzten beiden N\u00e4chte hatten wir deutliche Minusgrade. Als wir morgens den kleinen Heizl\u00fcfter \u00fcber den Wandler anmachen, springt die Sicherung raus und seitdem gibt der Wandler komische Ger\u00e4usche von sich. In der Pampa k\u00f6nnen wir abends den Generator anstellen und wenigstens den Laptop laden. Purmamarca ist traumhaft sch\u00f6n in den bunten Bergen gelegen, daher aber auch extrem touristisch. Mehrere Reisebusse stehen vor dem kleinen Ort, schon an der Stra\u00dfe stehen die ersten Souvenirst\u00e4nde und der zentrale Platz ist mit H\u00e4ndlern (haupts\u00e4chlich Decken, T\u00fccher, Ponchos, Pullover) belegt. Wir laufen nur bis zum Aussichtspunkt und erkunden dann noch ein paar Gesch\u00e4fte in den Nebenstra\u00dfen. Da wir etwas Probleme mit der H\u00f6he haben und Ralph festgestellt hat, dass wir Bremsfl\u00fcssigkeit verlieren, \u00e4ndern wir unsere Pl\u00e4ne und fahren statt weiter in den Norden nach Humahuaca wieder Richtung S\u00fcden nach San Sebastian de Jujuy. Hier wird das Besorgen von Bargeld wieder zum Abenteuer. Erst beim 4. Anlauf bin ich erfolgreich. Um kurz nach 18h sind wir bei einer Mercedeswerkstatt und treffen noch einen Mechaniker an. Er sagt uns, wir sollen am Morgen um 8.30h wieder kommen, dann k\u00f6nnen sie sich das Auto ansehen. Damit wir nicht gro\u00dfartig hin und her fahren m\u00fcssen, \u00fcbernachten wir vor der T\u00fcr. Gegen 9h am n\u00e4chsten Morgen wird Alabtros in die Werkstatt gefahren. Die Bremsfl\u00fcssigkeit wird erneuert und der Beh\u00e4lter gereinigt und neu abgedichtet (bis jetzt kein weiterer Verlust). Unser Plan, \u00fcber die RN9 nach Salta zu fahren, wird in El Carmen gestoppt. An einer Kontrollstelle, wird uns gesagt, dass die Stra\u00dfe nicht f\u00fcr schwere Fahrzeuge zugelassen ist. Also fahren wir ein St\u00fcck zur\u00fcck \u00a0und dann ein St\u00fcck der Strecke, die wir auf dem Weg nach Salta schon mal gefahren sind. Wir \u00fcbernachten an einer YPF Tankstelle direkt an der Kreuzung der RN34 und der RN9. Hier erleben wir wieder das aktuelle Dieselproblem. Schon bei unserer Ankunft steht eine lange Schlange an LKWs vor der Tankstelle. Am n\u00e4chsten Morgen stehen die Fahrzeuge 4-spurig bis auf die Tankstelle. Gegen 11.30h kommt dann der Tankwagen. Diesmal nehmen wir die s\u00fcdliche Umfahrung von Salta. Bei La Merced treffen wir mittags Adriaan und Anne-Marie aus NL mit ihrem Pickup Camper. F\u00fcr uns geht es dann auf die RN33 und durch das Tal des Flusses Escoipe. Der erste \u00dcbernachtungsplatz ist uns zu feucht. Ein St\u00fcck weiter \u00fcbernachten wir dann auf einem Platz zwischen Stra\u00dfe und Fluss. Die Strecke ist extrem kurvig mit vielen Serpentinen, aber wir werden immer wieder mit tollen Ausblicken belohnt. Bei einem Stopp h\u00f6ren wir ein \u201ebrodelndes\u201c Ger\u00e4usch und wir stellen fest, dass wir vorne links wieder \u00d6l verlieren, es diesmal aber auch aus dem 4×4 Schalter rausdr\u00fcckt. Wir \u00fcbernachten nochmal im Nationalpark Los Cardones in einem Kakteenfeld, ehe wir morgens nach Cachi fahren. Unterwegs halten wir noch an einem Verkaufsstand mit Gew\u00fcrzen. In Payogasta sehen wir viele Felder, auf denen Einheimische Tomaten und Pepperoni trocknen. Ralph m\u00f6chte ein paar Tage Pause machen, aber der Platz in Cachi scheint nicht so toll zu sein. So fahren wir nach einer kurzen Besichtigung des Ortes weiter \u00fcber die alte, sehr kurvige und schmale RN40 bis Seclantas und von dort \u00fcber Nebenstrassen zu Martina und Johan, die den Campingplatz Utopia betreiben. Hier verbringen wir ein paar Tage. Ralph stellt die Ventile neu ein und stellt fest, dass wir wieder K\u00fchlfl\u00fcssigkeit verloren haben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the evening of our arrival in Salta I get a WhatsApp message from Veronica that she and Hernan are also in Salta. We had towed the two of them almost 100 km in 2019 and had stayed in contact since then. In the morning we take a cab to a laundry in the city center and then walk to the Central Square, where we meet the two briefly. We agree to go out for dinner the next evening, but unfortunately, we don\u2019t manage to do so. After we have bought a bus ticket, we explore the city for 3 days on foot and by bus. Salta is quite a lively city, but again and again we note the strong contrast between nicely renovated and almost dilapidated buildings. There are some churches to see and we visit the museum M.A.A.M, where one of three children’s mummies is exhibited in rotation. The children were brought to the volcano as sacred offerings, drugged in a way that they fell asleep and then died peacefully from lack of oxygen. Unfortunately, we cannot take the cable car to the viewpoint because it is out of service for maintenance. From Salta we drive north on RN51. Our first destination is Santa Rosa de Tastil. I read in the guidebook that the town is located at 2,600 meters. However, that was a mistake. It says that it is 2,600 meters higher than Salta. At 3,200 \/ 3,500 meters we both get a slight headache (more like a feeling of pressure). The next morning, we visit the archaeological site of an Inca settlement, which is another 100 meters higher (3,250 meters). On the way to the Salinas Grandes, we spend another night at an abandoned settlement next to RN79 (ex RN40). We are only allowed to go onto the salt lake with a guide. A total of 4 vehicles follows her. We have 2 stops. At the first one, the formation of the lake and the extraction and processing of the salt is explained. Again, unfortunately, only in Spanish. Therefore, we do not understand a lot. Afterwards we have a few minutes to take pictures. The guide gives tips and offers to take photos with our camera. The second stop is at the „Eye of the Lake“, a collection of 3 small lakes. Here the guide takes a few pictures of us with the reflection of the lake. Via RN52 we drive over a 4,170 meter high pass until shortly outside Purmamarca. The last two nights we had minus degrees. When we turned on the small heater fan in the morning via the converter, the fuse blowed and since then the converter makes strange noises. In the wilderness we can turn on the generator in the evening and at least charge the laptop. Purmamarca is beautifully situated in the colorful mountains, but therefore also extremely touristy. Several coaches are parked in front of the small village. Already at RN52 we see the first souvenir stalls and the central square is occupied with traders (mainly blankets, scarves, ponchos, sweaters). We only walk to the viewpoint and then explore a few stores in the side streets. Since we have some problems with the altitude and Ralph has noticed that we are losing brake fluid, we change our plans and instead of continuing north to Humahuaca, we head south again to San Sebastian de Jujuy. Again, getting cash becomes an adventure. I am finally successful at the 4th attempt. Shortly after 18h we are at a Mercedes garage and meet a mechanic. He tells us to come back in the morning at 8.30h, so they can have a look at the car. To avoid driving back and forth, we spend the night in front of the garage. Around 9h the next morning Alabtros is driven into the workshop. The brake fluid is renewed and the reservoir is cleaned and resealed (so far we did not notice any further loss). Our plan to drive via RN9 to Salta is stopped in El Carmen. At a checkpoint, we are told that the road is not approved for heavy vehicles. Therefore, we drive a bit back and then part of the route we have driven before when heading to Salta. We spend the night at a YPF gas station right at the intersection of RN34 and RN9. Again, we experience the current diesel problem. Already when we arrive there is a long queue of trucks in front of the gas station. The next morning vehicles stand in 4-lanes up to the pumps. Around 11.30h a tank truck arrives. This time we take the southern bypass of Salta. At La Merced we meet Adriaan and Anne-Marie from NL with their pickup camper. We continue on RN33 and through the valley of the river Escoipe. The first overnight place is too wet for us. A bit further on we spend the night on a place between road and river. The route is extremely curvy with many switchbacks, but we are always rewarded with great views. At a stop we hear a „bubbling“ noise and we realize that we are losing oil in the front left again, but this time it is also pushing out of the 4×4 switch. We spend a night in the National Park Los Cardones before we drive to Cachi in the morning. Before we reach Cachi we stop at a booth besides the road and buy some spices. In Payogasta we see a lot of fields, where locals dry tomatoes and pepperoni. After a short tour of the town we continue on the old RN40, which is very curvy and predominantly narrow, to Seclantas and from there on side roads to Martina and Johan, who run the Utopia campground.
