Nach dem schnellen Grenz\u00fcbergang beschlie\u00dfen wir, dass wir erstmal noch die 30 KM bis Mercedes fahren und uns dort mit Bargeld versorgen. Daf\u00fcr fahren wir an die Costanera um von dort schnell in zum Geldautomaten zu laufen. Wir wollen gerade aussteigen, das stehen schon 2 Deutsche mit ihren Fahrr\u00e4dern neben dem Auto. Karin und Detlef sind seit 8 Wochen mit einem MB1017 unterwegs und erkunden Uruguay erstmal in aller Ruhe. Sie stehen ca. 1 KM entfernt auf dem Camping Municipal. Nachdem wir eine ganze Weile miteinander gequatscht haben, beschlie\u00dfen wir, f\u00fcr heute auch Feierabend zu machen und auf den Platz zu gehen. Ich laufe noch schnell zur Bank und dann fahren wir das letzte St\u00fcck weiter. Das Wetter ist sch\u00f6n und wir sitzen den ganzen Nachmittag und Abend bis in die fr\u00fchen Morgenstunden (3:20h) zusammen vor den Autos. Da mein erster Eindruck von dem Ort ganz nett war, bleiben wir noch eine 2. Nacht und schauen uns tags\u00fcber den recht \u00fcberschaubaren Ort an. Au\u00dfer der Costanera, dem typischen zentralen Platz mit einer gro\u00dfen Kirche, gibt es keine besonderen Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten. Allerdings findet man in den Stra\u00dfen das ein oder andere sch\u00f6n renovierte alte Haus. Am Morgen verabschieden wir uns und machen uns auf den Weg zur Chacra Holandes in Atlantida. Die ganze Zeit, als wir in Argentinien in Villa General Belgrano waren, war es hier ca. 10 Grad w\u00e4rmer. Jetzt ist es eher umgekehrt. In erster Linie schlagen wir hier die Zeit tot, bis es im S\u00fcden Argentiniens w\u00e4rmer wird. Gleichzeitig nutzen wir aber auch das meistens gute Internet um einige administrative Dinge zu erledigen. Zwei Mal leihen wir uns die Fahrr\u00e4der von Jan und Marieke. Beim 1. Mal machen wir nur eine kleine Erkundungstour und beim 2. Mal m\u00fcssen wir nach ca. 8 km abbrechen, da ich einen v\u00f6lligen Blackout habe. An die R\u00fcckfahrt kann ich mich so gut wie nicht mehr erinnern. Keine Ahnung, was da oder wodurch das passiert ist. Hoffentlich war es eine einmalige Sache und passiert nicht nochmal. Zwei Mal fahren wie mit dem Auto in die Stadt. Beim 1. Mal nutzen wir die Gelegenheit, um unsere Vorr\u00e4te aufzuf\u00fcllen und stellen fest, dass der gro\u00dfe Supermarkt nicht nur bei Obst und Gem\u00fcse teurer ist als eine Verduleria (das hatten wir erwartet) sondern auch andere Lebensmittel teurer sind, als im Minimercado. Allgemein ist Uruguay was Lebensmittel angeht, eher teuer und wir fragen uns, wie die Einheimischen das machen. Laut einem Internetportal liegt das durchschnittliche Jahreseinkommen in Uruguay bei umgerechnet ca. \u20ac 13.000. Ich bin so gl\u00fccklich, als ich hier Naturjoghurt ohne Zucker bekomme, dass ich f\u00fcr 780 ml ca. 4 Euro bezahle (im Supermarkt w\u00e4ren es f\u00fcr die gleiche Marke und Menge fast \u20ac 5 gewesen). Nach dem Einkauf fahren wir dann weiter an die K\u00fcste und laufen ein St\u00fcck am Strand entlang. Inzwischen merkt man, dass es langsam Fr\u00fchling wird. \u00dcberall f\u00e4ngt es an gr\u00fcn zu werden und erste Knospen sprie\u00dfen auch schon. Au\u00dfer uns sind noch 7 S\u00fcdafrikaner von einem Filmteam, ein argentinisches Ehepaar mit 2 Kindern auf dem Platz. Die Afrikaner haben Probleme, ihre Autos aus dem Zoll zu bekommen. Nach ca. 3 Wochen sind sie erfolgreich und k\u00f6nnen endlich los. Die Argentinier machen gerade eine Kernsanierung eines Wohnmobils, mit dem sie dann auf Reise gehen wollen. Zwei Mal sind auch andere Deutsche auf dem Platz. Kathrin und Ulf sind auf dem Weg nach Hause und machen ihr Fahrzeug f\u00fcr die Einlagerung fertig. Melanie und Andreas sind mit ihren beiden Kindern erst vor 2 Wochen angekommen und machen einen kurzen Zwischenstopp, ehe es auch f\u00fcr sie nach Argentinien gehen soll. Ansonsten machen wir kleinere Reparaturen und vertr\u00f6deln die Zeit mit YouTube (Ralph) und lesen (Ute). In der 4. Woche gibt es Nachwuchs; eine tr\u00e4chtige Stute bekommt ihr Fohlen. Die Geburt haben wir nicht mitbekommen, aber etwas sp\u00e4ter dann die Versuche des Fohlens aufzustehen und die ersten Schritte zu machen. Alle Bewohner und Tiere der Farm, bis auf die Katzen, sind am Ort des Geschehens. Insgesamt gibt es hier 6 Pferde, 4 Katzen, 3 Hunde, ca. 25 H\u00fchner (wir bekommen kostenlos Eier) und 1 Schwein. Nach 33 Tagen brechen wir wieder auf. Ehe wir Uruguay verlassen, geht es aber erst noch zur Colonia del Sacramento. Die Altstadt geh\u00f6rt seit 1995 zum Unesco Weltkulturerbe. Der kleine Umweg lohnt sich. Wir stehen direkt am Ufer des Rio de la Plata \u2013 hier treffen wir auch Melanie und Andreas mit ihren Kindern wieder – und k\u00f6nnen zu Fu\u00df in die historische Altstadt. Die schmalen Gassen mit Kofpsteinpflaster und sch\u00f6n renovierten H\u00e4user mit zum Teil netten, kleinen Restaurants und Caf\u00e9s sind wirklich sehenswert. Nach 2 N\u00e4chten geht es dann nach Fray Bentos, unserer letzten Station in Uruguay. Hier besichtigen wir das ehemalige Liebig Werk. Der Deutsche Justus Liebig hat hier die Herstellung von Fleischextrakt entwickelt, der unter dem Namen OXO weltweit vertrieben wurde. F\u00fcr 1 kg Extrakt wurden 32 kg Fleisch ben\u00f6tigt. Am 22.06.1979 fanden die letzten Schlachtungen statt (in 4 Std. 15 Min. 483 Rinder) ehe das Werk dann am 15. 10.1979 die Produktion eingestellt hat. F\u00fcr eine F\u00fchrung waren wir leider etwas zu sp\u00e4t. So kommen wir nur in die Ausstellungshalle, aber auch hier gibt es einige interessante Sachen zu sehen und lesen (leider nur auf Spanisch). F\u00fcr die Nacht finden wir in der N\u00e4he einen Stellplatz mit Blick auf den Rio Uruguay. Am n\u00e4chsten Morgen geht es dann zur Grenze und um 10:25h sind wir wieder in Argentinien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the fast border crossing, we decide to drive the 30 KM to Mercedes and provide us with cash there. Once we reach the town, we drive to the Costanera to run quickly to the ATM. As we just get out of the car, 2 Germans with their bicycles are already waiting for us outside. Karin and Detlef are on the road for 8 weeks with a MB1017 and currently explore Uruguay. They stay about 1 KM away on the Camping Municipal. After chatting for a while, we decide to call it a day and go to the campground as well. I quickly run to the bank and then we continue the last piece. The weather is nice and together we sit outside the whole afternoon and evening until the early morning hours (3:20h). Since my first impression of the town was quite nice, we stay a 2nd night and walk at the to and through the small village during daytime. Except for the Costanera and the typical central square with a large church, there are no special sights. However, one can find one or the other beautifully renovated old house in the streets. In the morning we say goodbye and make our way to Chacra Holandes in Atlantida. The whole time we spent in Argentina in Villa General Belgrano, it was about 10 degrees warmer here. Now it is rather the other way around. First and foremost, we are killing time here until it gets warmer in the south of Argentina. At the same time, we use the mostly good internet to do some administrative things. Twice we borrow the bikes from Jan and Marieke. The 1st time we only do a small exploration tour and the 2nd time we have to stop after about 8 km because I have a complete blackout. I can hardly remember the return trip. No idea what happened there or what caused it. Hopefully it was a one-time thing and won’t happen again. Twice we drive into the city by car. The first time we use the opportunity to fill up our supplies and find out that the big supermarket is not only more expensive for fruits and vegetables than a Verduleria (we expected that) but also other foods are more expensive than in the Minimercado. In general, Uruguay is rather expensive as far as food is concerned and we wonder how the locals do it. According to an Internet portal, the average annual income in Uruguay is the equivalent of about \u20ac 13,000. I am so happy when I get natural yogurt without sugar that I pay about 4 euros for 780 ml (in the supermarket it would have been almost \u20ac 5 for the same brand and quantity). After shopping, we drive to the coast and take a short walk along the beach. Meanwhile we notice that spring is coming slowly. Everywhere it starts to become green and first buds are already sprouting. Besides us there are 7 South Africans from a film crew and an Argentinean couple with 2 children on the place. The Africans have problems to get their cars out of customs. After about 3 weeks they are successful and can finally leave. The Argentineans are doing a core renovation of a motorhome, with which they then want to go on a trip. Twice other Germans arrive. Kathrin and Ulf from Bavaria are on their way home and preparing their vehicle for storage. Melanie and Andreas with their two children arrived only 2 weeks ago and have a short stopover before it they cross to Argentina as well. Otherwise, we make minor repairs and just kill the time with YouTube (Ralph) and reading (Ute). In the 4th week there is an offspring; a pregnant mare gets her foal. We didn’t witness the birth, but a little later we saw the foal’s attempts to get up and take its first steps. All the inhabitants and animals of the farm, except for the cats, are on scene. In total there are 6 horses, 4 cats, 3 dogs, about 25 chickens (we get free eggs) and 1 pig. After 33 days we move on again. Before we leave Uruguay, we first visit Colonia del Sacramento. The old town is part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage since 1995 and really worth a visit. We park directly besides Rio de la Plata \u2013 where we meet Andreas, Melanie and their kids again \u2013 and the historical town is in walking distance. The small lanes with cobble stones and nicely renovated houses, that partly accommodate cosy restaurants and caf\u00e9s, are really beautiful. After 2 nights we move on Fray Bentos, our last destination in Uruguay. There, we visit the formerly Liebig factory. The German Justus Liebig developed the meat extract, that was later sold under the brand name OXO all over the world. For 1 kg of extract 32 kg of meat where needed. On 22nd<\/sup> June 1979 the last slaughter took place (438 cows in 4 hrs 15 mins.) and on 15th<\/sup> October 1979 the factory finally closed down. Unfortunately, we were too late for a guided tour and therefore could only visit the exhibition hall. However, there are a lot of interesting thinks to see and read (unfortunately only Spanish). Not far away we find a place for the night with a nice view over Rio Uruguay.
